Some Linux Distros Vulnerable to Version
Open Source

In the wake of all of the stories about the Windows DLL hijacking bug, it appears that certain Linux distributions may be vulnerable to a similar problem related to the way that Linux handles a specific variable in some cases. The bug apparently was introduced via a Debian patch last year.Read More

A conceptual problem in the memory management area of Linux allows local attackers to execute code at root level which is caused by potential overlaps between the memory areas of the stack and shared memory segments, according to a report by Rafal Wojtczuk. Read the full article

Ubuntu Unravelled
Open Source

I’m aware that nearly all people in the Linux ecosphere are familiar with what Ubuntu is. However, it is my impression that many people, including some Ubuntu users, do not know how the distribution is made. Most are familiar with the principle that Ubuntu is largely based upon the Debian distribution,
but not a great deal beyond this.

To give you a quick introduction to Debian, it is an entirely community-based distribution, although some of the contributors are large businesses. No single company has overall control or official end user support. Debian is made up of three separate releases: ‘Stable’, ‘Testing’ and ‘Unstable’. Each release is given a codename from a character in the movie Toy Story. It took me some time to realise this. When a new upstream application version enters Debian, it is uploaded to the unstable repositories and generally, depending on bugs raised, will cascade into testing. When testing is considered reasonably stable and ‘release blocker’ bugs are resolved, it is ordained to be the next stable release. This process produces a very stable platform when it is released. However, the applications available in stable can often become quite old. Consequently, many Debian users actually use the ‘testing’ version on their everyday machines.

Ubuntu 10.04 beta 1 is looking good, less brown
Open Source

Canonical has announced the availability of the first Ubuntu 10.04 beta release. The new version of Ubuntu, codenamed Lucid Lynx, is scheduled to arrive in April. It will be a long-term support (LTS) release, which means that updates will be available for three years on the desktop and five years on servers.

The beta is not quite ready for use in production environments, but it's already fairly robust and ready for widespread testing. You can download it from the Ubuntu Web site. If you would like to test it in a virtualized environment without having to change your current Ubuntu installation, . For more details about 10.04 beta 1, check out the official release notes.

Ubuntu 10.04 To Support iPhone/iPod Touch?

Well, this is a welcome surprise for those of us waiting for Ubuntu 10.04, the Lucid Lynx. Several users are reporting that their iPod Touches and iPhones (including the 3GS) work in alpha 3 - without tweaking, without jailbreaking, without patching - with Nautilus and Rythmbox.
