PROFESSIONAL SYSTEM LIBRARY
ProSysLib is a free,
open-source library that offers a simplified, generic and logically ordered COM
protocol for accessing most commonly used information about the system and the
environment in which the client application is running. ProSysLib implements a
root namespace of type PSLSystem that provides access to the component's
architecture in a logical manner, with six sub-categories, as shown on the left,
that define logical namespaces for everything else in the library. These six
categories include both actual information and further sub-categories with
derived grouping logic, thus presenting all information in the system as a
logical tree. This concise Help system for the library is only to get you
started, because the rest will follow in the same self-donbnenting tree logic,
which is the central idea of this library, making it naturally easy for you to
find the information you need

 Know Your Software
Software Unknown Devices helps you find what those unknown devices in Device Manager really are. By checking Device Manager for unknown devices and extracting information from it, this program attempts to figure out what the device is. You might not have to open your case or look up random numbers off of PCI cards to figure out what they are

HashTab is a Windows shell extension which adds a tab called "File Hashes" to the Windows Explorer file properties. The tab contains the MD5, SHA1 and CRC-32 file hashes. These are common hashes that are used to verify the integrity and authenticity of files. Many download sites list the MD5 hash along with the download link. The HashTab makes it very simple for Windows users to check these hashes on any file on the system without using external tools

ENVy allows the environment variables of two machines to be visually compared and highlighted for differences. ENVy was written for the times when you've asked "Why does it work on your computer? What's different about your environment?" Those who've experienced this also know what a pain in the butt it is to sort through environment variables using the lovely environment variable editor that comes with Windows. In addition to comparison, ENVy allows the differences in variables and values to be easily merged into your local environment by using a single right-click action. So at the same time you find the differences, you can choose to insert them into your environment with no hassle or painful cutting and pasting. ENVy also provides full capability for the creation, editing, and deletion of environment variables and values using a user-friendly, vertical display of values. Multiple values can be added, removed, and modified all at the same time while editing a single variable (screenshot on the right). Environment variables can even be renamed with one simple operation

Hardware hackers get second Bugs bite
TechnologyHardware hackers can soon start building their own Linux gadgets with a fresh batch of Lego-like building blocks from Bug Labs. Bug Labs told The Reg it's targeting "late September/early October" for a second release of BUGmodules, version 1.3. Bug Labs had said earlier this month it hoped for release this week, but also warned at the time things could slip.

Version 1.3 will see completely new modules offering GSM, WiFi and ZigBee wireless - along with an upgrade to the existing BUGbase unit that these and existing modules plug into. The BUGbase is also adopting SD flash memory to provide capacity at a low price. Other features, blogged about and expected, include a new build system - Poky is replacing Linux Target Image Builder (LTIB) - and a JamVM virtual machine as it moves off the phoneME mobile stack. Poky is based on Open Embedded, which offers a large package library for those building systems on Bug Labs.

During a recent interview, Bug Labs member Ken Gilmer told us the plan is to supply a larger number of devices than it did during this spring's first release, as these had quickly sold out. Bug Labs is not saying how many units it sold then or how many it plans this time.

 Vista Annoyances Resolved
VistaWhat makes this Vista article any different? The title provides a clue: it's as much about providing practical working solutions to resolve some of the commonly-quoted Vista annoyances as anything else.

That in itself should give all Vista users a reason to read it.

However it doesn't matter whether you use Vista or not, because this article does something that most of the others don't: it takes an objective and up-to-date look at the current state of Vista, with a range of facts, clear examples and informed opinions aimed squarely at debunking a lot of the myths and FUD we've been gagging on for the past year.

So for those of you still considering whether to make the switch from XP, for those of you who want to abandon Vista and go back to XP, for those of you who used Vista a while ago and who are wondering whether it's worth using again now - this article puts things in perspective with the latest facts..

IE 8 looking like a November release
Internet ExplorerSeems like all you have to do is mention “porn,” and the Internet Explorer (IE) 8 tipsters crawl out of the woodwork. (Just kidding… Sort of….)

noted yesterday that Microsoft only had 11 more days within which to deliver the more customer-focused IE 8 Beta 2 if it were to hit its August deadline. According to one well-placed tipster, who requested anonymity, the current plan is for Microsoft to make IE 8 Beta 2 available for download from its Web site by August 28. And the final version is tracking for a November release, the tipster added.

Microsoft is expected to provide some previously undisclosed new features as part of the upcoming beta release, including some kind of new private-browsing (a k a “porn mode”) functionality. (To be clear: Microsoft isn’t confirming it will have the same kind of “private browsing” functionality that Safari already offers, and some are speculating that all Redmond will end up doing is identifying which sites are porn sites, which won’t be very useful to those who are hoping IE 8 will help them cover up their online tracks. )

Microsoft is expected to make the Beta 2 build available to anyone who wants it. The Beta 2 build is the successor to the more developer-focused IE 8 Beta 1, which Microsoft also made available to any interested parties, on March 5. I’m hearing that folks who already have IE 8 Beta 1 installed will get Beta 2 via Automatic Updates.

Microsoft to target Windows XP Pro users with Genuine nagware notifications
MicrosoftMicrosoft is stepping up its war on software pirates by rolling out new Windows Genuine notification software for what it is calling its most pirated version of Windows: Windows XP Professional. In an August 26 posting to the Windows Genuine Advantage blog, Director of Genuine Windows Alex Kochis said XP users should expect Microsoft to begin rolling out a new version of Windows Genuine Advantage WGA notifications starting this week. Microsoft is expecting the rollout to take several months.

The new WGA notifications, which Microsoft will deliver via Windows Update (and which already is available for download by individuals from the Microsoft Download Center), will behave like the WGA notifications introduced with Windows Vista Service Pack (SP) 1 back in December 2007. Specifically, users whose XP copies are deemed “non-Genuine” will see their screen backgrounds default to black and notice a translucent notice, warning them that their Windows might be counterfeit.

Update Microsoft officials noted that WGA for XP never did default to reduced functionality mode,” a k a, the kill switch, which was part of Windows Vista when it first shipped. Windows XP did not contain the reduced functionality mode commonly referred to as the ‘kill switch,’ and it still doesn’t,” a spokeswoman said. “The update simply reconfigures the notifications experience to mirror notifications in Windows Vista SP1.”)

Google to Rescue WiFi Network Which EarthLink Left for Dead
GooglePartnering with other companies, Google hopes to keep free WiFi alive in one California town: The communications network EarthLink was for a time seen as a messiah of sorts for the free wireless movement. After spending millions to build several free networks in cities across the country, its efforts collapsed, and it went from messiah to pariah for its failed claims. The bad part was that EarthLink’s customers were suddenly faced with severance.

Some networks, such as Philadelphia's municipal WiFi, which was supposed to be shut down in June, have been saved by private investors. At the last minute, when dismantling was expected to commence, a group of investors known as the Network Acquisition Company bought the network, and have kept free WiFi flowing to parts of the city. Now Google is partnering with I-Net Solutions, and some wireless equipment makers, to rescue another network which EarthLink left for dead. They are looking to help the city of Milpitas stay connected. Milpitas is home to SanDisk’s headquarters and the headquarters of several other major tech firms. Seagate, Symantec, Cisco, Maxtor, and many others have offices in the city as well.
